Alena Walentin was born in Russia, but as a very young girl she went to London to pursue her dreams to become a professional flutist and to have an international career.
She tours as a soloist and chamber player around the world, including the US, Canada, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, a number of European countries and, of course, her native Russia. She is a member of prize winning Atéa Wind Quintet, since 2012 Associate Ensemble in Residence at Birmingham Conservatoire and Ensemble in Residence at The Purcell School. She gives recitals with piano and harp and occasionally plays trio with her husband, Swiss-Danish violinist Niklas Walentin.
Ms Walentin is sought after as guest principal flutist with orchestras such as The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Philharmonia Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Royal Northern Sinfonia and Verbier Festival Chamber and Symphony Orchestra.
Ms Walentin teaches at Birmingham Conservatoire, The Purcell School, London City University, William Bennett International Flute Summer School, and in the summer of 2014, she was invited to teach at the Verbier International Festival in Switzerland.
In 2009, she won 1st Prize at the 13th Friedrich Kuhlau International Flute Competition in Uelzen, Germany and she is also the winner of competitions under the auspices of British Flute Society and Royal Academy of Music.
Ms Walentin studied in London at Royal Academy of Music with professor William Bennett and Patricia Morris. In 2011 she graduated with flying colours. She pursued her studies at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, where she obtained her Master of Music with distinction.
Ms Walentin performs in a duo with Anne Delholm, since 2015 “Official Harpist to HRH The Prince of Wales”.
Please enjoy the two young musician’s rendition of a movement from a Bach sonata:
…Ms Lugovkina (now Walentin, red.) sounded very musical while also technically brilliiant.
Lugovkina’s Bozza “Image” overwhelmed the venue. The flautist charmed with the clarity of her clear crisp tone, singing with the flute. ..splendid flute playing.
